Preserving the Memory of PFC Thomas L. Corbett A Soldier Remembered

It happens almost every day.

A small package arrives containing a handful of medals, a set of dog tags, a photograph, or a few treasured possessions that have survived long after the men and women who carried them. To some, these items may appear ordinary. But behind each one is a life, a family, and a story entrusted to our care.

Today, that story belongs to PFC Thomas L. Corbett of Hampton, Virginia.

Assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade, Corbett arrived in Vietnam only about two weeks before he found himself fighting on Hill 875 during the Battle of Dak To. One of the bloodiest engagements of the Vietnam War, the battle placed American forces against some of the fiercest fighting of the conflict. During the second day of the battle, PFC Corbett was killed in the intense combat that surrounded the hill.

For a time, his family was left without answers. Corbett was initially listed as missing in action, leaving those who loved him waiting and hoping for news. Eventually, his remains were recovered, allowing his family and fellow soldiers to finally know his fate and bring him home.

Today, the personal effects he carried through those final days have been carefully cleaned, preserved, and placed on display.

His medals and dog tags are no longer simply objects from a war long past. They are tangible reminders of a young man who left Hampton, Virginia, to serve his country and made the ultimate sacrifice. They represent not only his military service, but the person behind the uniform—the son, friend, and fellow soldier whose life mattered.

This is why we preserve these items.

It is not because of the metal, the ribbons, or the tags themselves. It is because every artifact represents a person whose story deserves to be remembered. These objects carry the weight of personal history. They connect us to the individuals who served, the families who waited, and the sacrifices that shaped generations.

The artifacts of PFC Thomas L. Corbett now have a new home within our collection, where they will continue to tell his story. His service, his sacrifice, and his memory will remain preserved for future generations.
