Image Rights & Permissions

Ghosts of the Battlefield is a nonprofit museum and educational organization dedicated to preserving and sharing military history and the stories of those who served.

We make reasonable, good-faith efforts to determine the provenance and rights status of photographs and other historical images appearing on this website. Images are used when, to the best of our knowledge, they are in the public domain; are works of the United States Government; are owned by Ghosts of the Battlefield; have been supplied or authorized by veterans, family members, photographers, collectors, or other rights holders; are made available under an applicable license; or are used for purposes permitted by law, including criticism, commentary, scholarship, education, and fair use where applicable.

Historical photographs frequently circulate through archives, military collections, veterans’ collections, museums, memorial organizations, publications, and family collections with incomplete or conflicting provenance. Where the creator or source of an image is known, Ghosts of the Battlefield endeavors to provide appropriate attribution. Attribution is provided for historical and scholarly purposes and should not be interpreted as a claim of ownership by Ghosts of the Battlefield.

Ghosts of the Battlefield respects the intellectual property rights of photographers, families, archives, publishers, and other rights holders. If you are a copyright owner or authorized representative and believe that an image or other material appearing on this website has been used without appropriate authorization, please contact us and identify the material, the page on which it appears, and the basis of your rights claim. We will promptly investigate legitimate concerns and, where appropriate, correct the attribution, obtain permission, replace the material, or remove it.

Our purpose is not to appropriate the work of others, but to preserve history responsibly, accurately, and respectfully.
