At just 20 years old, Robert L. Conley left South Bend, Indiana, and entered the war in Vietnam. Serving as a vehicle repairman with the 9th Infantry Division, his work was essential. In a conflict where mobility could mean survival, men like Conley kept trucks, armored vehicles, and support equipment running so combat units could continue their missions.
On February 1, 1968, in Gia Dinh Province, Conley was killed by enemy small-arms fire.
He was not the kind of soldier whose name appeared in headlines. He was one of the countless men whose work happened behind the scenes—repairing, maintaining, and keeping others moving through the chaos of war. His contribution may have been measured in engines repaired and vehicles returned to service, but its true value was in the lives and missions those machines supported.
