Leading in the Shadows

Leading in the shadows Captain Joseph W. Parent led in a different kind of war, one fought by small teams in isolated places where the traditional line between front and rear often did not exist. As an infantry officer assigned to Special Forces Detachment A-5-230, he brought the skills of a combat commander into a mission built upon training, advising, cooperation, and close partnership with allied forces.

Born on May 13, 1938, in Glendale, Missouri, Parent served in Vietnam as an Infantry Unit Commander. His assignment required far more than directing men from a secure headquarters. Special Forces officers worked closely with the troops they advised, accompanying them into remote areas where enemy activity was an ever-present threat.

The war they experienced was often personal and immediate. Small detachments operated far from the large bases and formations most commonly associated with the conflict. Their members depended upon one another while building trust with the local and allied troops they trained, supported, and fought beside. Officers such as Parent were expected to lead by example, remaining close to their men and accepting the same dangers.

On April 3, 1966, Captain Parent was mortally wounded by small-arms fire during hostile action. His death reflected the nature of the mission he had been assigned to carry out. He was forward, exposed, and present where his leadership was needed most.

Captain Joseph W. Parent was a Special Forces officer, a Missouri soldier, and a leader who served in the quiet, dangerous places rarely seen by the public. He stood beside those entrusted to his command and did not step away when the danger became real.

We remember Captain Joseph W. Parent and the service he gave in a war fought deep in the shadows.
