Summary of Action

During the Battle of the Coral Sea on 7 and 8 May 1942, Lieutenant (junior grade) William E. Hall distinguished himself through extraordinary courage in aerial combat against Japanese naval forces.

On 7 May, Hall took part in a determined attack against a Japanese aircraft carrier.

Flying directly into heavy anti-aircraft fire, he pressed home his dive attack with exceptional skill and aggression.

His attack contributed materially to the destruction of the enemy carrier during one of the first great carrier battles in naval history.

The following day, 8 May, Hall again entered combat during fierce air battles over the Coral Sea.

Enemy fighters swarmed the American aircraft.

Despite overwhelming opposition, Hall aggressively maneuvered against the attacking Japanese planes, repeatedly turning into the fight instead of breaking away.

In a series of determined counterattacks, he helped destroy three enemy aircraft.

During the engagement, Hall was seriously wounded.

Even so, he refused to abandon the fight.

Maintaining the same fearless tactics that had marked his actions throughout the battle, he continued flying and ultimately succeeded in bringing his damaged aircraft safely home.

His courage, aggressive fighting spirit, and determination in the face of grave danger reflected the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
