Summary of Action
On 10 April 1969, then-Specialist Fourth Class Jesus S. Duran distinguished himself while serving as a machine gunner with Company E, 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division.
During a search-and-clear operation in the course of the Vietnam War, his unit came under intense enemy fire.
Several American soldiers were wounded and left exposed in the danger area.
Recognizing the crisis, Duran used his machine gun to suppress the attacking enemy and protect the wounded.
Despite grave danger to himself, he maintained fire and helped create the opportunity for casualties to be recovered.
His determined action blunted the enemy attack and shifted momentum back to friendly forces.
Under his covering fire, wounded soldiers were saved and the enemy was forced to withdraw.
His courage, aggressiveness under fire, and devotion to his fellow soldiers reflected the highest traditions of the United States Army.
