Bringing History Beyond the Museum Walls*

A museum may have walls, but history does not have to remain inside them. At Ghosts of the Battlefield, preserving military history means more than placing artifacts in cases. It also means finding ways to bring those objects into the community, where they can create conversations, recover memories, and connect people directly with the men and women whose stories they represent.

Sometimes that begins right outside our own doors. With museum space always at a premium, portions of the collection extend outdoors, including two distinctive pieces of Marine Corps history: our M274 A5 Mechanical Mule and M422 Mighty Mite. Both were created to give Marines lightweight mobility in places larger vehicles could not easily reach. The Mule became a versatile workhorse capable of carrying ammunition, supplies, equipment, and wounded Marines, while the compact Mighty Mite was designed as a lightweight, air-transportable vehicle suited to expeditionary operations.

Displaying vehicles such as these outdoors does more than solve a space problem. It allows visitors to encounter military history on a different scale and reminds us that many artifacts were never meant to exist quietly behind glass. They were built to move, work, carry, protect, and serve alongside the people who depended upon them.

That same idea carries the collection well beyond the museum itself. Through community events, veteran gatherings, educational programs, and special exhibitions, Ghosts of the Battlefield regularly takes artifacts directly to the public. A uniform, photograph, piece of equipment, or vehicle can become much more meaningful when someone recognizes it, remembers using something like it, or begins telling the story of a family member who served.

Those encounters are often some of the most valuable moments in our work. Veterans have an opportunity to reconnect with objects from their own experience, families can better understand what their loved ones carried or used, and younger generations can encounter history as something tangible rather than simply a photograph or paragraph in a book. Sometimes an artifact we bring out to teach a story ends up bringing another story back to us.

Whether an artifact is displayed inside the museum, parked outside our doors, carried to a community event, or shared through our online collection, the purpose remains the same. These objects are preserved because they connect us to real people and real experiences, and those connections become stronger when history is shared rather than hidden away.

Ghosts of the Battlefield will continue preserving the collection within the museum, but we will also continue taking history beyond its walls whenever we can. The artifacts may belong to the past, but the conversations, memories, and connections they create are still happening today.
